The city council has scooped a gold award at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show for the fifth year running with its display in part inspired by Birmingham’s famous miniature needle artist Willard Wigan.

The centre piece of the display was a five-metre tall needle. Willard famously creates his tiny sculptures in the eye of a needle.

There was also a tribute to grass roots sport including boxing, running and children playing in a park.

Council head of parks Darren Share MBE, said: “It is wonderful to bring home another gold for Birmingham and I’d like to thank Willard Wigan for working with us on this incredible design.

“I’d also like to thank the team who have again demonstrated their skills combining structural elements with beautiful plants grown in the city’s nurseries and hot house. Through this now award winning design we have been able to shine a light on Birmingham’s creativity.”

He added that those unable to visit the display at Chelsea this week can see it recreated in Cannon Hill Park alongside an exhibition of Willard’s work at the Midland Arts Centre throughout June.

Willard also found himself featuring in television coverage of the Chelsea Flower Show.

He said: “Birmingham has always proudly represented me and I’ve always been proud to represent Birmingham. It is an honour and a pleasure to be involved in Birmingham’s display at Chelsea. We tend to disregard the little things that we can’t see but my sculptures have a very big impact and I am looking forward to seeing how they will work in this design.”
