Hundreds of demonstrators took to Birmingham City Centre streets in a grassroots backlash against MPs' attempts to force Corbyn to resign.

The protesters, brandishing banners and draped in flags saying “#KeepCorbyn” marched from the Bullring to Victoria Square for a rally of solidarity.

Chants of ‘Corbyn in, Tory's out’ echoed round New Street as the demonstration, organised by members of pro-Corbyn Labour campaign group Momentum, made its way through the city centre.

Birmingham MPs are among those who have backed a vote of no confidence in Mr Corbyn and increased the pressure on him to stand down.

But seven Birmingham councillors have signed an open letter in support and called the rally to show that the grass roots party members still back Jeremy Corbyn as leader.

Cllr Majid Mahmood (Lab, Hodge Hill) accused MPs of backstabbing and plotting against their leader who he described as 'a legend'.

He later told the Birmingham Mail: “It is an affront to democracy that the leader is being held hostage by parliamentary members of the Labour Party against the wishes of the majority of the Labour members”

He added: “I will continue to uphold the democratic wish of the members of the party, and respect their decision for Jeremy Corbyn to continue his role as the leader”.

Nick Parker, a public sector worker from London, took part in the march to express gratitude to the Birmingham council members.

Nick said: “I want to make sure that the gains we have made as a result of Corbyn don’t go to waste and that we continue to have a Labour party leader that actually defends the ordinary people in whatever their circumstances”.

Nick and many other demonstrators felt that the 172 MPs that voted no confidence in Corbyn, have “stabbed him in the back”.

One passionate young demonstrator shouted into a microphone, “I want Jeremy Corbyn as leader more than anything in the world.
