Birmingham is the only contender in the running to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games it has been confirmed - leaving an open goal to secure major global sporting event.
The deadline for cities to submit bids passed on Saturday, September 30 with just the one hat in the ring.
Potential bids from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and Victoria in Canada had run out of steam in recent weeks through the failure to secure funding. In contrast Birmingham’s bid won the backing of the Government which has agreed to cover 75 per cent of the total funding - estimated to be between £600 million and £750 million .
Despite being a one-horse race Birmingham must still convince the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) it has the facilities and finances to deliver the major global sporting event before it can be officially named as host city in November.
The CGF remains cautious in had earlier this year dropped Durban in South Africa as host city after it emerged that suitable finances were not in place.
CGF chief executive David Grevemberg CBE said: ““Over the past few months, a CGF Review Team has been working with countries from across the Commonwealth to evaluate and advise on their potential hosting plans and Games delivery solutions,” David Grevemberg, chief executive of the CGF, said.
“There have been a range of conversations with a number of Commonwealth Games Associations, cities and governments who have mobilised to consider the opportunity of the 2022 Commonwealth Games, taking into account the special circumstances which the CGF is managing regarding this hosting decision.
“Bid documentation has been received from Birmingham, England and the CGF will now go through a comprehensive review and feedback process to ensure the bid meets the requirements of successfully hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
“There have also been continued expressions of interest and support from Canada, Malaysia and Australia. At its Board Meeting in Sri Lanka on 5 and 6 October, the CGF Executive Board will receive an update on the current status of the 2022 selection process. A final decision on the host city for the 2022 Commonwealth Games is expected by the end of the year.”
Canada and Malaysia have failed to submit a viable bid at this stage. Australia, which is hosting the 2018 Games at Gold Coast, has said it will only step in as a last resort.
Birmingham bid venues include an upgraded Alexander Stadium, Villa Park, the NEC, Birmingham Arena, Symphony Hall and University of Birmingham as well as facilities in Coventry, Sandwell and Leamington Spa.
With the vast majority of venues already in place Birmingham has been regarded as the low cost and low risk bid given the short four-year time scale to prepare.
