Birmingham's New Street Station is up for a top award for urban regeneration – just days after being voted one of the worst stations in the UK .

The railway station, one of the busiest in the country, is currently undergoing a major £600 million refurbishment which includes the new Grand Central shopping mall and John Lewis department store.

The renovation project is up for an award at the world’s biggest property trade fair MIPIM , to be held in Cannes next month.

It  is one of 28 global finalists, including Battersea Power Station, battling it out for the People’s Choice Award for Regeneration.

Last month rail watchdog Passenger Focus announced that New Street was voted the worst station in the UK, but it was recognised that much of the area is a building site and will not be finished until spring 2015.

Birmingham City Council leader Sir Albert Bore said: ““The transformation of Birmingham New Street, alongside Grand Central, will deliver not only a transport, shopping and community hub in the heart of our city and a gateway to the wider region.

“Reaching the finals, pitched against some of the most prestigious projects in the world, is testament to our ambition as a city and I would urge people to vote and make our station a truly international people’s choice.”
