What happens when a new Audi A4 hits a barrier at 40mph? Not a lot, according to the latest EuroNCAP safety test.

The video may look dramatic, but the German saloon recorded a five star rating in the European safety ratings and is now the fourth safest car tested this year.

The family car was fired at high speed into a barrier head on, while a side impact test recorded similar impressive results. The gruelling crash tests are used for all new cars sold in Europe and only the Volvo XC90, Toyota Avensis and Audi Q7 recorded higher overall scores this year.

The Audi A4 scored 90% for adult protection int he event of a crash and 87% for child protection. Pedestrian protection was rated at 75%, as was the level of safety features on the car.

The car was one of four tested by the leading crash test organisation this month, with the new Honda HR-V crossover SUV and the Honda Jazz recording five star ratings. The Jazz is only the second small car - known as superminis - to secure the top rating. The fourth car, the Volkswagen Caddypeople carrier, received a four-star rating.
