Many thousands of owners are currently wondering what the effect of the VW emissions scandal will have on the value of their car if they want to sell it or trade it in. Those with diesels from anywhere in the Volkswagen Group’s range are particularly anxious. But so far professional opinion is divided over the impact.

Glass’s Guide, the bible for the motor trade to gauge valuations, states that Volkswagens as a brand are in effect 2.1% down on the previous month and Volkswagen diesels are 3% down on the rest of the relevant market sector. But CAP Automotive is suggesting we wait and see.

CAP’s Black Book editor, Derren Martin, cautions against too instant a response since, at the time he was speaking, the scandal had been running for just a week. So far they’ve seen no change but Martin went on to say: “We are not discounting there may be some short-term impact on prices across the marques in the Volkswagen Group over the coming weeks, due to the amount of negative media coverage.”

In the UK alone VW is recalling over half a million VW models as well as 400,000 Audis, 77,000 Seats and 132,000 Skodas.
