Zenos has already sold the 80 cars it plans to build in 2015. But with a bulging order book they’re aiming to see if they can up production to 150 cars before the end of this year. That’s not a bad problem to have.

The company was started by Mark Edwards and Ansar Ali, both of whom worked for Caterham, and they are now based at premises in Norfolk. From there, the sports cars have already started being delivered to foreign buyers, notably in China and the USA.

So far there is the one model, the E10, which is based on a 2.0-litre Ford engine giving 200bhp through a five-speed transmission. An uprated version selling well, the E10S, has a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine giving 250bhp. The engine sits in the ‘E-platform’ made of extruded aluminium with bolted-on tubular steel sections. Much of the floor, bulkheads and panels are made of a very light and strong material made of a composite aluminium sandwich. Prices start from £24,995.

Work is already underway on a new E11 model which, unlike the E10, will be fitted with doors. Future models will have the option of a £4000 Track Pack, giving everything from a six-speed transmission to uprated springs and dampers, since many owners will be buying them for track days.

Zenos still have some spare capacity since, under European regulations, they could build up to 1000 cars a year.
