Two years after its first trial, a partnership between Shell and PayPal to allow drivers to pay for fuel via smartphone is now being rolled out to the majority of Shell’s 1000 UK fuel stations.

After opening a Shell Motorist app for iOS and Android that’s paired to their PayPal account, the customer selects 'Fill Up and Go'. Once they’ve chosen a maximum amount, they scan the QR code at the pump. Leaving the phone in the car, the driver refuels as normal once the 'start refuelling' message appears.

The pump automatically stops dispensing fuel when the spend limit is reached. You’re only charged for the amount taken if it’s less than the set maximum. Transaction history, receipts and Shell Drivers’ Club loyalty points are all available and visible through the app.

Shell expects half of its participating stations to have the technology in place by the end of this summer.

Michael Hominick, retail marketing manager at Shell UK praised the new system for giving customers “the flexibility and convenience of paying without having to leave their car… those who want to go in store and pay or purchase other items will still be able to, with the benefit of reduced queues."

A Shell spokesperson confirmed that the new system should only be used from inside a car. "Shell has worked with the London Fire Brigade on this payment solution and its implications for mobile use on the forecourt. They’ve confirmed in-vehicle use is safe."
