Earlier this year, a Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S broke the front-wheel drive lap record on the Nurburgring. It did so in completely showroom-standard form – but don’t bother looking for one in a showroom any more.

That’s because the 150 examples allocated to the UK have all been sold.

You can still get the GTI Clubsport 40 upon which the S was based, though with more weight and less power this might feel like second best. It does cost £3055 less, however, than the £33,995 ‘Ring-tamer.

In the unlikely event that you’re one of the 150 people who bought a Clubsport S, the good news is that you’ve only got a couple of months or so left until you can actually drive it. The first right-hand drive examples are due here in October.
