Audi’s A4 Avant has always been one of its best sellers and the styling and innovative features on the newest generation look set to maintain that trend.
The latest one is sharper and has more powerful, dynamic lines than any of its predecessors – and comes with a host of features to make driving more relaxed.
It now also has more presence on the road, and from behind the wheel feels more solid and planted no matter how hard you drive it.
At the same time the latest generation is more agile thanks to changes to the electromechanical power steering as well as new front and rear suspension.
And greater emphasis by designers on reducing drag has not only helped to lower fuel consumption but also make this one of the quietest cars in its class.
But if you like the new exterior you will be equally impressed with the new look interior with its wraparound design, stylish use of modern materials and businesslike layout.
And at night ambient lighting on the doors creates a warm, intimate feeling in the cabin.
The analogue speedometer has a bold digital readout set in its centre for instant recognition while the digital readout at the centre of the rev counter tells which of the seven speeds of the s tronic gearbox you are in.
In the case of my test car this seamless box was mated to the more powerful of the two four-cylinder, 2.0-litre diesel engines on offer, this one boasting 190 bhp.
Over the years Audi has gradually increased the power available from this engine and the latest gives you spirited performance with massive amounts of torque and an impressive 0-62 miles per hour acceleration time of just 7.9 seconds.
It might be an estate car but it’s certainly a high performance one, particularly if you take advantage of the various suspension alternatives and opt for dynamic.
For anyone looking for even more responsive motoring there is a sports setting on the gearshift or you can drive the car using the paddles set behind the steering wheel.
Audi believes in packing its latest cars with creature comforts which make life easier for the motorist and the new A4 Avant is no exception. You no longer have to manually release or pull back the roller blind-style luggage 9.4 cover each time you raise the tailgate, it’s now all done automatically.
And if you go to the car with an armful of parcels you can open the tailgate simply by swinging your leg from left to right under the rear bumper. Although on a couple of occasions it didn’t work for me and I got a few funny looks.
On the subject of the luggage area there is now 505 litres of space in this one, which is more than that of its main rivals the BMW 3 Series Touring and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class estate.
Surprisingly despite the hefty price tag, however, there were no cup holders in the rear – a rarity in modern cars.
