BMW’s new X1 is all new, and the more rugged SUV look reflects the revised values of increased practicality and more of a presence on, or off the road. The wheelbase is longer, and the X1 is now wider and definitely taller.

It is all based on BMW’s new compact platform, with all but the entry model now offering four-wheel drive. Powering that is an uprated version of the 2.0-litre turbodiesel and jolly good it is too. There’s plenty of grunt from lower down and it keeps on pulling past the midrange. It feeds through the new and exemplary eight-speed automatic gearbox for a great combination.

Handling and stability is excellent, particularly at speed, belying that more 4x4 appearance. It handles like it doesn’t have that higher silhouette that it actually does, and the steering is well weighted.

Inside those larger dimensions mean more space for the occupants and their luggage. Rear passengers can gain an extra 66mm if the optional adjustable rear seats are fitted, while the luggage area can be up to 85 litres larger, with plenty of useful places for smaller or weightier items.

In xLine trim, as tested here, the price is £33,680 which is definitely not bargain basement, but this is a likeable, practical vehicle you could live with for a while. With low depreciation and a claimed 57.6mpg, this more characterful X1 may find quite a few owners.
