The 9th Worcester Beer, Cider and Perry Festival, scheduled for August 16 - 18 has been cancelled due to the flooding that occurred last weekend.

After several months of planning for the largest ever festival, where 10,000 people were expected to attend, the Campaign For Real Ale said they had no option other than to cancel the event.

Festival organiser, Bill Ottaway said, "We are very sad to say that due to the terrible flooding that we have experienced, CAMRA had no other option that to cancel this year’s Worcester Beer Festival.

"Pitchcroft is still under water and although set up would not have started to August 11 it was felt best to cancel now rather than wait to see what happens over the next couple of weeks. This allows us to inform as many people as possible and to reduce the amount of financial damage that would occur if we had to cancel nearer to the event dates in order to ensure the viability of the festival in future years."

CAMRA had tried to identify other possible sites but couldn’t find a site that was large enough and it would take at least 28 days to obtain a premises license. There were also worries that the rail transport may not recover in time for the festival which would prevent many people from being able to attend.

Mr Ottaway added: "We hope that everyone that was looking forward to attending this year’s festival understands our decision. It was a very hard decision to make. We will be back next year and hope that this year’s unprecedented flooding will not put people off from returning in 2008."
