Students protesters occupying a University of Birmingham building are to be served with an injunction ordering them to leave or face further action.

A group of students have been barricaded for almost 12 days inside the Hornton Grange Conference Centre, off Edgbaston Park Road, ignoring all requests to leave.

Today, a High Court judge granted an injunction which means the occupiers must vacate Hornton Grange.

A similar injunction – rumoured to cost in the region of £30,000 – was made last November when a group of protesters, under the banner of Defend Education, staged a week-long sit in at the Senate Chamber in the Aston Webb building.

Judge Purle QC said yesterday: “I will consolidate two actions.

“I will make one for the possession of the entire campus, and will also grant an injunction in relation to Hornton Grange in similar terms to that granted to Aston Webb.

“And we will see what happens next.”

Last Wednesday, 13 people were arrested when violence flared at a Defend Education national meeting at the campus.

Three men appeared in court accused of violent disorder following the protest and were bailed to appear at the city’s crown court on 23 May.

A further protest is expected to take place tomorrow.
