Solihull College has teamed up with Virgin Trains to find unemployed young people to join the rail company's training scheme.

Youngsters between the age of 18 and 24 are being invited to apply for places on the course which starts in October.

The 13-week course will combine classroom training with real life experience of the front line, working as a member of Virgin Trains' customer service team in the West Midlands.

Successful candidates will achieve a level 1 certificate in customer service, a level 2 certificate in employability skills and functional skills in English and Maths in addition to a reference and the opportunity to be fast-tracked into Virgin Trains talent pool from which the company selects future employees.

Amanda Robinson of Virgin Trains said: "We're excited to be partnering with Solihull College.

"We know that there are a lot of young, talented people in the West Midlands who are struggling to find work.

"The new traineeship programme is designed to give them a real insight into a career in customer service, something that will stand them in good stead and give them the confidence to go out there and secure full time employment."

The traineeship is an unpaid work-based programme and is designed to teach people basic work and personal skills so they will be equipped with the right abilities to approach either an apprenticeship or employment.

Based at Birmingham International station, there will also be the opportunity to work from Birmingham New Street, Wolverhampton and Coventry.

The Pride of Birmingham Awards, organised by the Birmingham Mail in association with Virgin Trains, takes places on September 26 at Birmingham Town Hall.
