Warwickshire's county championship match against Yorkshire at Edgbaston saw the first day washed out as persistent rain fell over Birmingham.

England coach Peter Moores gave his captain Michael Vaughan and bowler Matthew Hoggard permission to play for Yorkshire after rain washed out the first two days of last weekend’s Roses Match against Lancashire at Old Trafford.

But there was no opportunity for the pair to get in any meaningful practice before next week’s First Test against India at Lord’s as the weather prevented any play and forced umpires Tim Robinson and Peter Hartley to abandon play at 2.45pm.

Warwickshire's England batsman Ian Bell, who was controversially omitted from Warwickshire’s side for the Friends Provident Trophy semi-final defeat by Hampshire last month, was in line to make his first Championships appearance at Edgbaston in 13 months.

But Bell, who had clear-the-air talks with Warwickshire officials during last week’s one-day International at Edgbaston, had to content himself with a net session in the indoor centre as the rain relented only briefly.
