Legendary golf commentator Peter Alliss is to be the guest of honour at Redditch Golf Club’s Centenary Dinner next month.

Mr Alliss, aged 82, is the voice of golf on the BBC and has also designed many golf courses.

With Centenary Captain Tom Sheldon, he will unveil the club’s Centenary Clock and then speak at the dinner to 300 members and guests.

The club’s 100 years are being marked with a special two day golf tournament for the Centenary Salver, a pairs betterball competition on Friday and Saturday, September 27 and 28.

The festivities continue on the Sunday when a trick shot golf show will be followed by a pig roast and the presentation of the prizes for the Centenary Salver competition.

Redditch Golf Club was founded in 1913 and the opening of the club was marked by an 18 hole exhibition match between J.H. Taylor, the Open Champion of that year, and George Duncan, the winner of the Belgian Championship.

For its first 59 years, the club’s home was the Plymouth Road Pitcheroak golf course, now the town’s municipal course, but the construction of the new Bromsgrove Highway resulted in the municipal course being downsized to its current nine hole form and the club moved to the present Callow Hill course in 1972.

Centenary Captain Tom Sheldon said: “As well as providing Redditch Golf Club with a fresh start, the move next to Morton Stanley Park also bequeathed a priceless legacy to Redditch – a town centre municipal golf course.

“Since 1972 Redditch Golf Club has developed at Callow Hill into one of the Midlands’ best courses with a modern clubhouse hosting members on a daily basis and regular corporate events for Birmingham and Worcestershire companies.

“We want individuals and companies to come and sample what Redditch Golf Club has to offer and we hold out a warm welcome to anyone who would like to visit the club with a view to individual or corporate membership,” he said.
