Police in the West Midlands have been assaulted more than 1,000 times in just three years, according to new data.

New figures released in Parliament show a total of 1,105 assaults were self-reported by serving officers to the force's human resources and health and safety teams.

That works out as more than one every day.

The data includes assaults that took place both on and off duty.

Ministers warned the figures were not directly comparable with other parts of the country because different forces record incidents in different ways.

The data was released by Home Office Minister Mike Penning in answer to a parliamentary question lodged by Labour MP Alan Whitehead.

In all, there were 276 assaults reported by police in the West Midlands in 2011/12, 406 in 2012/13 and 423 in 2013/14 - the three most recent years for which data is currently available.
