A man who ‘mugged’ a shopkeeper after he had just withdrawn £3,000 from a bank in Birmingham has been jailed for 21 months.

David Beeson, 36, of Saxeby Road, Druids Heath, was found guilty of theft following a trial at the City’s Crown Court.

The victim, Paramjit Singh, went to a Lloyds TSB bank in Stratford Road, Hall Green, on July 21 last year and withdrew the cash to buy stock for his shop. In passing sentence Judge Trevor Faber said Beeson had also been in the bank watching what people were doing.

He said Beeson had then got into his car and waited for Mr Singh to come out and followed him to his home.

The defendant then snatched the bag containing the £3,000 “so skilfully that no violence or struggle took place”. Beeson claimed at his trial that there had been a road rage incident and that he had been stabbed in the back by Mr Singh, an account rejected by the jury.
