Jane Tyler pays a visit to Bracebridge Road, in Four Oaks, Sutton Coldfield, which has been named as the most expensive road in the West Midlands.

If they were on a Monopoly board, they would be Park Lane and Mayfair.

These are the most exclusive streets in the West Midlands, the homes to Premiership footballers and the city’s most successful businessmen and where an average house will set you back a cool £1.37 million.

According to an annual property survey, Bracebridge Road on the private Four Oaks Estate in Sutton Coldfield, is the most expensive road in the West Midlands with Roman Grange in Little Aston named as the second most expensive, with average prices soaring to £1,360,400.

Sutton Coldfield dominates the list of the top 10 most expensive roads in the region, according to the Mouseprice Annual Street Rankings Survey.

Eight of the 10 streets named are either in Four Oaks or Little Aston, with Solihull and Edgbaston making up the remaining two.

A sign at the entrance of Bracebridge Road, a stone’s throw from Sutton Park and Moor Hall Golf Club, proclaims “Four Oaks Estate - Private Road” leaving you in no doubt you’ve left the riff raff behind and are entering the world of the region’s most wealthy homeowners.

It is a long road, not especially wide and the hedges look like they could do with a trim. But the most noticeable thing is the size of the houses, all set back from the road, down gravel drives.

One resident, returning from her daily power walk in Sutton Park, says she is not surprised it is the most expensive road in the West Midlands.

“Everyone aspires to live on the Four Oaks estate – if you live in Sutton, this is where you ultimately want to be,” she said.

The woman, who did not want to give her name, has lived there for 28 years and bought her house for £93,000 at a time when interest rates were 15 per cent.

“It really is perfect: you’ve got Sutton Park on your doorstep, Four Oaks train station is just five minutes away and you can get on the motorway in no time at all,” she said. “Sutton town centre is a short walk and all the schools are good.”

She said it was also a friendly road and she had made many friends there, although it wasn’t the kind of road where you “lived in each other’s pockets”.

This year’s Mouseprice survey shows Roman Grange falling to second place after holding on to the top spot for three years in a row.

And unlike the rest of the market, the top 10 streets have seen their property values go up over the last year, showing that the tough conditions of the last 12 months have had little effect on the expensive areas with prices remaining resilient.

Only two of the streets have average values under £1 million, compared to three in last year’s report.

The average price in the top 10 streets is £1,154,390 – up from last year’s average of £1,058,040.

Making it onto the list for the first time are Wentworth and Roman Roads, Lovelace Avenue in Solihull and Endwood Drive, Little Aston.
