Department store chain John Lewis is expected to open a new multi-million pound store in Tamworth, Staffordshire.

The decision comes weeks after the chain revealed it would open a £100 million store at Birmingham’s New Street Station.

The store is expected to open in Ventura Park following a planning application by local developers Aucott.

The “at home” store, creating dozens of new jobs, will be a major boost for the out of town shopping complex.

A planning application for the development was approved by Tamworth Borough Council earlier this year, although John Lewis has not confirmed it is in the frame for the site.

But an insider said: “We’re confident that John Lewis are the firm behind the application. It will be a big tonic for the area.”

The 5,500sq m building was described as “striking” by John Gunn, Tamworth council’s chief planning officer, at the meeting when planning consent was granted for the site.
