Four new cases of the potentially deadly swine flu have been confirmed in the West Midlands.

The Health Protection Agency has said three of the cases, which involve two adults and a young child, have come as a direct result of contact with children at Welford Primary School in Handsworth, where a child has been established as carrying the virus.

More than 20 other pupils at the school are suspected of having swine flu which led to its temporary closure on Friday last week.

The Agency has also announced that the fourth new case is linked to the three young members of a Worcestershire family said to have contracted the bug during a trip to Orlando in Florida.

Health officials say no schools or nurseries were affected as the children had become unwell before returning to the classroom following the holiday.

A spokesman from the Agency said it was unable to comment on specific cases because of patient confidentiality.

Eleven new cases in the UK, including those in the West Midlands, were confirmed by the Agency yesterday taking the UK total to 133 – eight of which are in the West Midlands.
