Talented youngsters proved they had the building blocks for success during an inventive Lego competition.

Schoolkids and children’s organisations from across the region took part in the event at the University of Birmingham to demonstrate their science and technology skills.

The First Lego League is a global science and technology competition to encourage an interest in real world issues and develop key skills that are crucial for their future careers.

They were challenged to design and programme a Lego Mindstorms robot – and then use it to solve problems and tasks.

Each team had 10 weeks to prepare for the event, sponsored by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), one of 24 regional tournaments taking place across the country.

The winners on Tuesday were pupils from Boreatton Scout Group, based in Shropshire.

Barry Brooks, president of the IET, said: “It was a fantastic competition and there so much talent on show on the day. The designs were of a very high standard.”
