Birmingham Post business writer Jon Griffin picked up two gongs at Thursday night’s Midlands Media Awards at Villa Park.

Griffin won the Columnist of the Year category along with the Business Journalist of the Year award.

Judges singled out Griffin’s entry for ridiculing corporate management speak following Premier Foods’ decision to close the Hovis bakery at Garretts Green with the loss of 600 jobs. He also won the Business Journalist category for exclusives on the expansion of the Jaguar plant at Castle Bromwich and the MG Rover Trust Fund.

BPM Media photographer Tim Easthope won the News Photo of the Year award for his dramatic picture of an explosion at the Alcohols Ltd gin distillery in Oldbury which made the front page of Post sister title the Birmingham Mail.

And Birmingham Post and Mail head of web, Anna Jeys, won the award for News Website of the Year.

The coveted Newspaper of the Year category was won by the Lincolnshire Echo.

The Birmingham Press Club event, hosted by TV news anchorman Bob Warman, was attended by more than 300 representatives of the Midlands print, digital and broadcast media.
