The Aston Expressway and junction six of the M6 will close tonight from 8pm for nearly 60 hours.

Highways England has today confirmed that the work to repair and waterproof the road surface on the famous Expressway will definitely go ahead this weekend.

It is the first of up to seven full weekend closures set to take place between today and September 5 to coincide with the school holidays.

The closure is part of wider works to repair the roads around junction six of the M6 including slip roads leading north and southbound off the Aston Expressway onto the motorway.

Speaking at a Birmingham City Council scrutiny meeting yesterday, Highways England said a decision on whether to close the Aston Expressway would be taken every Friday at midday following several meetings between itself and the council.

Agency spokesman Alistair Harris said that severe weather would prevent the works from going ahead, meaning there could be some summer weekends when the road will remain open.

The overall project is expected to run until the end of 2016.

The exit from the Park Circus roundabout onto the Aston Expressway is closed for the entire duration of the roadworks while traffic cannot access the M6 in either direction from Salford Circus roundabout on the A38 Tyburn Road.
