The great and good of Birmingham’s culinary scene are preparing for the city centre’s major annual festival of food next weekend.

Opus Restaurant, Purnell’s and Metro Bar & Grill are among dozens of restaurants taking part in the Colmore Business District (CBD) Food Festival 2013 on July 12 and 13.

The festival has returned for a third year after a successful event in 2012 which saw over 15,000 plates sold.

A total of 27 venues, many of whom are independent businesses, will be serving taster options priced from as little as £1.50 to £5 in Birmingham’s Victoria Square.

David Colcombe, chef director at Opus and visiting professor of culinary arts at University College Birmingham, said: “Within Birmingham’s square mile, Colmore Business District, there is a fantastic selection of eateries.

"From independent cafes and coffee shops serving artisan sandwiches and ethically sourced coffee through to Michelin recommended restaurants, there’s something to suit every taste and budget.”

As well as tasters from Birmingham restaurants, real ales, fine wines, champagne and delicious cocktails will be on offer.

There will be a programme of live cooking demonstrations from top chefs in CBD, including the Michelin-starred Glynn Purnell of Purnell’s and Mr Colcombe.

Following feedback from last year, the 2013 festival will have an increased focus on its sustainable credentials, with a waste management company providing a recycling service.

The festival will once again take place with the Birmingham International Jazz & Blues Festival, which will see live music performances hosted by CBD for the fifth consecutive year. Visitors can also look out for fantastic outdoor theatre and performances from CBD’s choir of local business people, Colmore Chorus.

Other participants include Asha’s, Chi Bar & Grill, Colmore Bar & Grill, Edmund’s Lounge, Bar & Eatery, Ginger’s Bar, Hindleys Bakery, Hotel du Vin, Saffron, Six Eight Kafe, The Old Joint Stock pub, Urban Coffee Company and Yorks Bakery Cafe.
