Supermarket giant Sainsbury's has announced it will open 20 new Argos concessions within its stores by Christmas.

The listed group said it would bring the total number of concessions to more than 30 before the end of 2016 and follows the firm's recent £1.4 billion acquisition of Home Retail Group which owns both Argos and home ware retailer Habitat.

In addition to the Argos plan, five Mini Habitat stores will also open inside Sainsbury's shops but the group is not yet able to confirm the locations of the new concessions.

The Argos 'digital stores' within the supermarkets will offer customers a choice to either buy instantly via tablets or to reserve online for same-day collection.

The Mini Habitat shops will sit alongside the existing homeware and cookware ranges in the supermarkets.

Sainsbury's chief executive Mike Coupe said: "This is the start of an exciting new phase for Sainsbury's, Argos and Habitat.

"I am delighted to be able to quickly capitalise on the benefits of our combined group by opening more Argos digital concessions in our stores and introducing the Mini Habitat format to our customers.

"Being able to shop across all three brands under one roof will make our customers' lives even more convenient and offer them incredible choice."

John Rogers, chief executive of Home Retail Group, added: "Argos is one of the UK's leading digital retailers.

"We know customers value the convenience of shopping for Argos products whenever and wherever they want and we are pleased to be quickly rolling out 20 more digital concessions in Sainsbury's stores before Christmas.

"Habitat is a fantastic brand and we know customers will value the opportunity to shop the stylish ranges in Sainsbury's stores."
