A Kings Heath hair salon is being transformed into an art gallery for two days to raise money for charity.

Coustis Hair & Beauty on Alcester Road South is aiming to raise funds for the Kings Heath-based All Saints Youth Project.

The event is just one initiative being undertaken by the salon which this year celebrates 30 years of trading in south Birmingham.

Originally opened by Cypriot Costas Constantinou in April 1984, the salon is now managed by the founder’s son and daughter, Tony Constantinou and Tina Bartlam.

“Over the years both we have been amazed, and inspired, by the background, stories and talent of our clientele, and also been aware of the increasingly fervent artistic community within Kings Heath and the surrounding areas,” said Ms Bartlam.

“There is definitely a strong artistic streak across our customer base, from aspiring to well-established artists and also a number of lecturers and collectors. So when we considered what we might do to celebrate our 30th year, creating a pop up art gallery felt like a good fit.”

Mr Constantinou said: “It enables us to showcase talent from the community, engage with other traders and ultimately give something back to our clients, who will be invited to all our events – all whilst raising money for a fantastic local cause.”

The two-day exhibition is open to the public from 10am to 5pm on Sunday May 11 and 2pm to 7pm on Monday May 12 and will showcase a diverse range of art forms including everything from watercolours to contemporary installation.

Oils, sculpture, ceramics, textiles and photography will also be included with artists including Kirsten Adkins, Richard Green, Elena Thomas, Mick Trimble and Dot Wilkins.

Neville Summerfield, Chairman of the Kings Heath Business Improvement District (BID) said: “Tina and Tony are great ambassadors for all that should be celebrated in Kings Heath.

“We have a wealth of first rate businesses run by first rate people, and in this case, providing an opportunity for local talented residents to show their work.

“This series of events is eagerly awaited; the local and wider community can get a real feel for what a vibrant area this is and all that Kings Heath has to offer.”

All Saints Youth Project has been providing recreational and informal educational schemes for young people since 1998.
