Birmingham Cathedral’s grand exterior has been turned into a giant art canvas for four evenings.

A newly-commissioned large-scale artwork called In the Marvellous Moment is being projected directly onto the side and front of the building.

The Arts Council-supported art installation is being described as a jewel in the city’s Christmas celebrations and features the portraits of local people and their thoughts, hopes and reflections.

The Cathedral has worked with artists Geoff Broadway and Andy McKeown on the projection.

The commission marks the start of the build-up towards the celebrations of the Cathedral’s 300th anniversary in 2015 and the Cathedral’s ambition to enable community participation, celebration and reflection upon life’s meaning, by reaching out to the 20,000 people who pass through Cathedral Square every day.

To make In the Marvellous Moment workers, shoppers, and passers-by from in and around the Cathedral district were invited to reflect upon what the festive season means to them – sharing their concerns and aspirations.

The art installation takes place between 4pm and 9pm until tomorrow evening, Saturday December 21.
