Birmingham-based law firm Wragge has advised on the first stage of a flagship project for the Royal Navy - the £3 billion plus scheme to design, build and maintain two new aircraft carriers.

A team led by projects partner Michael Whitehouse acted for the Ministry of Defence on the first alliance agreement of its kind and a series of contracts to develop the design of the new vessels.

These will be the largest warships in the British Armed Forces. The project will create about 10,000 jobs.

The agreement with Aircraft Carrier Alliance participants, MoD, BAE Systems, KBR, Thales UK, VT Group and Babcock, plus contracts worth £143 million, covers the key demonstration phase of the work.

The Wragge team comprised Mr Whitehouse, Jane Pittaway and IP partner Michael Luckman. Partners David Hamlett and Nicola Mumford provided additional specialist expertise. They were assisted by Mark Cooper, Richard Nicholas and Sara McNeill, working closely with Peter Cockerton, the MoD's commercial and procurement manager and head of commercial, Jim Pass.
