A lawyer at Birmingham solicitors Else has claimed top honours in the 2014 Midlands Family Business Awards.

Jonathan Tyson, associate and head of corporate & commercial at Else, won the Leading Adviser to Family Business Award in recognition of the advice he provides to family businesses.

The winners were announced at a black tie dinner at Nottingham Trent University attended by 300 guests.

Jamie Gayton of category sponsors Unum, who was one of the judges of the awards, said: “The quality of submissions was high and even deciding a shortlist was a particular challenge.

“Category winner Jonathon Tyson talked of a company culture that puts family businesses at the heart of what the firm does in the community.

“His first hand perspective of what it means to be involved with family members is evident - he is really able to give great insight on the impact of what can happen if a business decides to avoid the sometimes difficult conversations and decisions that need to be made, or what can happen when family members can’t agree on the way forward.

“These are very real issues in many family businesses and the overriding advice would be ‘to agree whilst things are agreeable’ – something that really struck home with me.”

Fellow judge and family business expert Peter Roper added: “The standard of entrant was extremely high and it was a very difficult task choosing an overall winner.”
