Shakespeares has appointed well-known Birmingham lawyer David Roy as partner and head of business defence.

Mr Roy joins the firm having led the tax investigations and prosecutions team at Cartwright King, where he specialised within all areas of financial crime. Before this, he was a founding partner at law firm Jonas Roy Bloom.

Based in the Birmingham office, but working across the wider Midlands region, Mr Roy will advise individuals as well as boardroom decision makers on criminal fraud proceedings.

He has previously worked on high profile cases such as the Kieron Fallon horse race-fixing scandal, Operation Hornet (the prosecution arising from the conduct of the disgraced impaired assets division of HBOS) and DEFRA’s biggest ever prosecution regarding the mis-selling of battery eggs as free-range.

Mr Roy said: “It is a really exciting time at Shakespeares and I am looking forward to developing a leading business defence division within the firm.

“Our specialist team will provide criminal defence services to clients across a variety of tax, fraud and financial misconduct proceedings.

“In terms of adding value, I am keen to provide support to any existing clients facing criminal fraud investigation or prosecution whilst offering advice on how to remain fully compliant.”

Mr Roy added that he plans to recruit a number of experienced lawyers to join him in the business defence team at the Birmingham office. The team will service clients across all of Shakespeares’ seven offices.
