The biggest law firm in the Midlands, Wragge & Co, has appointed David Fennell as its new global managing partner.

Mr Fennell will take over from Ian Metcalfe when his term ends in May next year.

Mr Metcalfe, who has been managing partner since 2006, decided not to continue into a third term and is planning to return to legal practice where he will focus on forging relationships with corporate clients.

Senior partner Quentin Poole said: “Ian has done a fantastic job during challenging market and economic conditions. Thanks to his careful stewardship, Wragge & Co is strong and well equipped for the future.

“In David, we have a hugely able successor, someone focused on constantly improving the service we provide to our clients at a price they are willing to pay.”

Mr Fennell said: “The legal market is changing. Clients are asking for more, the market is consolidating and no law firm can afford to be complacent.

"Wragge & Co has a clear strategy. We are in a good position, with our people, clients, culture and reputation to thrive in a competitive market. I am looking forward to my new role and to helping the firm develop.”

A projects and PFI specialist, Mr Fennell has led the firm’s 12-partner projects team for the past six years.

He joined from Herbert Smith in 1996, becoming a Wragge & Co partner in 2002.

Mr Metcalfe has presided over a period of sustained growth and investment across key practice areas, sectors and locations. During that time the firm has increased turnover by 36 per cent from £88.5 million to £120.5 million.
