Law firm Freeths has expanded its team in Birmingham with the appointment of a new corporate and commercial litigation partner.

Richard Coates spent eight years at national law firm Cobbetts prior to its collapse in 2013, followed by a four-year spell with Emms Gilmore Liberson where he was director of litigation services.

He joins the city centre-based practice with the aim of building a corporate and commercial litigation division in Birmingham, working closely with the firm's established corporate and dispute resolution teams.

Mr Coates has been a solicitor in Birmingham for more than ten years and has particular expertise in complex corporate disputes such as shareholder and partnership disputes.

His appointment follows those of Perveen Akhter, Zoe Walker and Nigel Gardner in January and the move across the Colmore Business District to new offices last year.

Managing partner Richard Beverley said: "We're delighted to welcome Richard to the team.

"His experience will prove vital in firmly establishing our commercial litigation offering in Birmingham.

"Richard has worked in the West Midlands legal sector for over a decade, acting for everyone from individuals through to large corporate and PLCs, in disputes both at home and abroad.

"Well respected in the city, I have no doubt he will be a great addition to our growing team."
