A hotel chain that put its faith in one of the city’s highest profile buildings is set to open a second operation in the city.

The 61-bedroom Hotel Indigo in Waterloo Street in the Colmore Business District is InterContinental Hotels Group’s second venture in the city after another Hotel Indigo opened in the Cube last year.

The new Birmingham venue will be managed by Rustic Pine Developments. The Cube hotel is run by Sanguin which has two other ventures in the city under different brands.

Robert Shepherd, IHG’s chief development officer in Europe, said: “Since introducing the brand in Europe in 2009 we’ve opened nine hotels - seven in the United Kingdom and two in Germany.

“This year we’ve also signed our first Hotel Indigo in Wales, the Hotel Indigo Cardiff, our third in Scotland, Hotel Indigo Edinburgh-Princes Street, our fourth in Germany and our first Hotel Indigo property in Israel.”

Mr Shepherd said the brand was popular with European developers as it suits conversion properties, which are easier to finance than new builds and can become operational sooner.
