A new hotel and conference centre in Edgbaston is set to receive the green light from city planning chiefs this week.

University of Birmingham is hoping to build the 172-bedroom hotel and event space as part of a long-running, £300 million regeneration of its campus in the city.

The new complex is expected to be open by summer 2018 and will be known as the Hornton Grange Hotel and Conference Centre.

Its existing facilities, called Conference Park at the University of Birmingham, employs around 40 staff but the new complex is expected to double the payroll there.

The new development will increase the total of number of beds at the park to 220 and be available to all sectors to hire for events, functions and parties.

Also included in the new project are plans to demolish two unused buildings and part-demolish, refurbish and extend Hornton Grange and renovate the Grade II*-listed Garth House.

Garth House is an 'arts and crafts' building constructed in 1900 while Hornton Grange was built in 1928 - both of them part of the existing conference facilities in Edgbaston Park Road.

The application will be debated by Birmingham City Council's planning committee on Thursday where officers have recommended it is approved.

The university's wider campus regeneration includes a new £55 million sports centre with 50-metre swimming pool, student accommodation, a library and sports fields.
