Another 600 student bedrooms are set to be built in Birmingham after Unite strengthened its presence in the city by adding a fifth site to its portfolio.

The firm has acquired land in the city's Gun Quarter to develop the rooms in a £40 million project.

The plot is close to its existing building The Heights, in Staniforth Street, and will join its other developments in Birmingham - Curzon Gateway, Londonderry House and Jennens Court.

Collectively, the five buildings will accommodate 3,300 students.

Although privately run, the new development will most likely attract students attending nearby Aston University and Birmingham City University.

It is due to open in 2019 and will join a burgeoning area of the city for student accommodation with work on Threesixty Developments' complex in Bagot Street well under way ahead of opening next September.

Other existing halls of residence in the Gun Quarter include Studios 51, Penworks House and Sanctuary Students while Fielding and Beaumont is planning to convert the former Globe Works canalside factory complex into 520 bedrooms.

Richard Simpson, managing director of property for Unite Students, said: "This central Birmingham site fulfils our criteria for growth and investment returns in a strong, regional location and we are delighted to have exchanged contracts to acquire it.

"Birmingham is a thriving university city and home to four higher education providers, offering a wide range of highly respected courses.

"When complete, the new property will provide a safe and secure home for the growing number of students attracted to Birmingham."
