PLANS for a major industrial asphalt plant on disused railway sidings next to Birmingham’s old Alstom site will go on show to the local community next week.

Road surface giant Tarmac wants to build the plant on part of the disused railway sidings in Washwood Heath and is due to submit a planning application next month.

The detailed proposals will be unveiled at Ward End Fire Station, Washwood Heath Road between 2pm and 8pm on Thursday, November 24.

Tarmac, the UK’s leading sustainable building materials and construction solutions company, is planning a state-of-the-art facility to manufacture coated roadstone – an essential material to support the ongoing delivery of highways infrastructure projects in Birmingham and across the wider region.

It will also recycle old asphalt for environmentally friendly re-use on the region’s roads.

Nick Atkins, Tarmac estates manager, said: “This new asphalt facility would play an important role in supporting infrastructure projects in Birmingham and the West Midlands and would help to meet the current and future need for sustainable road materials, as well as creating up to ten new jobs.

“A carefully conceived design will reduce the visual impact of the facility and its location would enable materials to be transported to the site by rail, thereby reducing HGV traffic on local roads. We welcome the opportunity to discuss our plans with the local community and provide people with a chance to have their say.”

Local residents will be able to view proposed designs of the facility at the exhibition, while members of the Tarmac project team will be available to explain the scheme and answer questions. The event will also provide people with a chance to provide feedback which will be considered during the preparation of the planning application before it is submitted.

The plant is to the north of the former LDV and Alstom site. Part of that site has been earmarked for the HS2 rail depot.
