Groundworks and civil engineering specialist O'Brien Contractors has won the brief to work on the University of Birmingham's campus expansion plans.

Leamington Spa-based O'Brien, which won a Birmingham Post Business Award last year, has been selected to work on a design and build contract for the construction of a new footpath and cycle way from the main campus to the student residence village, the Vale, along with associated works and soft landscaping.

The second scheme will see the contractor install hard and soft landscaping around the new library.

The two projects are part of a wider drive by the university to expand and improve its main campus in Edgbaston which includes new sports facilities, student bedrooms and a 50-metre swimming pool.

O'Brien has previously worked for Aston University to develop its 'Student Villages' and Birmingham City University on its relocation to Eastside.

Director Stuart Chamberlain said: "University of Birmingham is internationally acclaimed with a reputation spanning over 100 years. We are absolutely delighted to be chosen to work on their campus redevelopment - one of the most high profile schemes taking place in Birmingham."
