The redevelopment of New Street station has been named project of the year for the second time in a week.

After taking home four prizes at last week's 2016 RICS West Midlands Awards, it has now been named construction category winner and overall project of the year by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) at its West Midlands Awards.

The judges were impressed with the extent and range of innovation in both design and construction with limited impact to the rail network, residents and businesses close by.

The logistics during construction were impressive, the panel said, and maintained a positive profile throughout construction and commissioning.

John Sunderland, former ICE West Midlands chairman who led the panel, said: "A worthy overall winner due it its complexity and significance both locally and nationally, showcasing our industry through innovation in both design concepts and construction strategies delivered in collaboration by all parties.

"The use of the existing structure and subsequent transformation creating a real wow factor and in the opinion of the judges a great project on so many levels."
