Plans to build city centre apartments on a car park close to the Barclaycard Arena look set to be handed the green light next week.

Earlier this year, Trigram Properties lodged an application to develop a 63-unit block in a L-shape on the corner of Edward Street and Helena Street.

Birmingham City Council's planning committee is due to debate the application at its meeting next week ahead of which officers have recommended the project is approved.

The scheme would comprise two blocks of five and six storeys respectively and contain 27 one-bedroom and 36 two-bedroom apartments.

There would also be two ground-floor commercial units measuring 1,723 sq ft and 2,018 sq ft, 20 car parking spaces and 72 spaces for bikes in what is already a densely populated area for apartment blocks.

A report prepared ahead of next week's planning committee meeting said: "The principle of the redevelopment of this site has been established previously and the proposed uses are consistent with local and national planning policy.

"It is considered the proposed design and site layout is appropriate to complete the development block and would not cause a significant loss of amenity to existing residential occupiers."

Shortly after these plans were lodged, another application in the same street was unveiled by property and parking group Gallan, to be called Edward House.

The company is working with Orion Developments on plans to build 82 apartments, ranging from one to three bedrooms, on its car park at the corner of Edward Street and Sand Pits.
