An historic Birmingham pub earmarked for development has been damaged after fire ripped through the rear of the building.

West Midlands Fire Service was alerted to the blaze at The Bromford, in Bromford Lane, at around 2.40pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Fifteen firefighters attended the scene and doused the flames within half an hour.

The 1930s pub is set to be demolished after Birmingham City Council granted planning permission last month for a project by Upward Care and Developments.

The site, along with land formerly occupied by a care home, is earmarked to make way for 69 houses and flats, a community hub, two shops and a clinic.

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said: "We were called today at 2.41pm to the Bromford in Bromford Lane, Erdington, following a 999 emergency call.

"The incident involved a single fire in the ground floor rear of a derelict two storey brick public house.

"Four firefighters using breathing apparatus tackled the fire with one hose reel jet and a covering jet."

One crew remained at the scene at 4pm to secure the site before the cause of the fire is assessed.
