Erdington is set for a new four-screen cinema as part of a major redevelopment of its "outdated" shopping centre.

The revamp of the Central Square complex will also include restaurants, cafés, hot food takeaways.

Details of the plan, proposed by property group New River Retail, were first unveiled earlier this year.

Now more information has emerged ahead of the scheme being discussed by Birmingham City Council planning chiefs, who have been recommended to approve it.

Initial designs show the cinema would have four screens, each capable of holding up to 89 people, while the centre itself would be rebranded as B23 Square.

Other work would see existing canopies removed and a new link ramp built between two existing car parks serving Central Square and the rear of the nearby Co-op supermarket.

The total number of parking spaces would be reduced by 22.

Planning documents lodged on behalf of the owners described Central Square as "currently outdated, unattractive and by no means conducive in creating an enjoyable shopping environment".

They added: "It is obvious that much of the building fabric has been poorly maintained over the last 48 years.

"Coupled with the mismanaged signage and lack of continuity throughout the centre as a whole, the existing Central Square is complete disarray."

The redevelopment project is due to be debated by council's planning committee next Thursday.

A report prepared ahead of the meeting said: "The proposal to provide flexible uses to vacant units are considered acceptable on the site and would contribute to increased footfall and improve vitality and viability of Erdington district centre without undermining the overall retail focus.

"The proposed changes to include green living walls would improve the appearance of the Central Square and the surrounding area."

In 2013, New River Retail brought forward fresh plans for the site with the aim of demolishing Central Square and replacing it with a major supermarket.

It would have placed it into direct competition with a new Sainsbury's store which was going to be built at the former Colliers car showroom, in nearby Sutton Road, but that particular project was shelved a year ago.
