A city centre hotel is poised to continue its expansion and redevelopment by almost doubling its number of bedrooms.

Work has already started on the The Royal Angus to turn part of the complex in St Chad's Queensway into the latest venue for budget chain Pure Gym.

And now new plans are set to be approved this week to take the hotel from 133 to 226 bedrooms by adding two storeys and also to carry out some general facelift work.

The project is due to be debated at Birmingham City Council's planning committee meeting this Thursday ahead of which officers have recommended the project is approved.

A report prepared for councillors said: "It is considered that the proposed development would improve the appearance of the existing hotel at a highly visible and busy location and therefore further enhance the city centre as a destination for business, retail and leisure opportunities."

Last summer, applicant Snow Hill Birmingham Developments lodged plans to convert the old Snowhill Snooker Centre and a former petrol station area underneath the then Thistle hotel into a gym or conference centre capable of hosting up to 550 guests.

The company has since decided to pursue the gym option and signed a deal to lease the space to Pure Gym which is also eyeing the Gala bingo site in Castle Bromwich for another venue.

The buildings housing The Royal Angus and neighbouring Holiday Inn Express make up the One Snow Hill Plaza complex.

The 224-bedroom Holiday Inn Express was opened in the 21-storey Kennedy Tower in 2013.
