A popular music venue and eatery at The Custard Factory is to shut its doors.

Alfie Bird and The Oobleck, commonly referred to as Alfie Bird's, has today confirmed rumours that the venue would be forced to close with immediate effect.

A statement written by management on their Facebook page proved that those rumours were valid.

It reads: "As some may have been aware by now, we have some bad news to communicate.

"It is with a heavy heart that we at Alfie Bird & The Oobleck need to admit defeat in our ongoing challenge to get a live music venue within The Custard Factory to work for the long term, and as of immediately the venue will be closed permanently.

"Its been a long 2 years of struggling with our overheads under tough conditions, and has come to the point of no return."

All events on sale are still valid and management are in talks to move them to alternative venues.

There will only be minimal changes to the plans for Shamrocks Festival to coincide with the St Patrick's Day Parade.

The venue has seen some significant names play over the years. The Cribs played a huge show in 2015 while Swim Deep and others have also performed.

The statement continues: "We have really enjoyed being involved in the promoting of some awesome events, had some great times and met some wonderful people, so we are in no rush to discontinue our efforts in promoting around the city in one way or another.

"Watch this space for new show announcements at a venue near you."
