Universities in the Midlands and China have agreed a long-term partnership in research and knowledge transfer.

Warwick Manufacturing Group, at the University of Warwick, which is headed up by Post columnist Professor Lord Bhattacharyya, has agreed a deal to exchange experties with the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB).

The agreement will see both universities working to develop collaborative research and development opportunities, by working with companies, in China, Europe and internationally, as well as national funding bodies.

Lord Bhattacharyya, chairman of WMG, said: “I look forward to working with USTB on joint collaborative research projects investigating the environmentally effective creation of innovative materials and their applications.”

Professor Zhang Xinxin, USTB president, added “I hope we can soon start cooperation in personnel cultivation and joint research projects in materials science and the related disciplines.”

This comes after WMG has announced that it is to create a £4.1 million International Institute for Nanocomposites Manufacturing, a first of its kind in the world.

Experts say the facility will enable industry leaders to manufacture large scale nanocomposite parts which will benefit a range of industries including aerospace, automotive and medicine.

It will play host to a team of 50 academics and researchers.
