Independent businesses stole the show by picking up the majority of the accolades at Kings Heath Business Excellence Awards.

The awards recognise outstanding quality and customer service and highlight the success and contribution that individuals and businesses make to the area.

More than 150 people attended the event at the Hare & Hounds pub, which picked up the award for best night out.

The award for best new addition went to I Had One of Those, which also won in the That’s So Kings Heath and Best Independent categories, proving that start-ups can flourish in the current economic climate.

Sylhet Spice was recognised as best for a bite to eat, followed by Cherry Reds.

There was also a special award for Catherine Edwards, who died last year.

Kate Smart, town centre manager, said: “Cathy played an instrumental role in setting up the Kings Heath Business Improvement District and this award recognises her dedication to Kings Heath.”
