Two Michelin-starred restaurants in Birmingham city centre have been included in a rundown of the UK's top 100 places to eat.

Purnell's and Adam's have been named in the Harden's 2016 guide with Purnell's ranked in 54th spot - three places above Gordon Ramsay in London - while Adam's was named the 90th best restaurant.

This was ahead of Marcus at The Berkeley in London which is run by Masterchef judge Marcus Wareing.

Sat Bains in Nottingham was named the best in the UK.

The results are calculated from the views of more than 6,750 restaurant-goers - making it the biggest survey of its kind in the UK.

The accolade by the guide is a further boost to Birmingham's restaurant scene which now has five restaurants with one Michelin star each.

Carters of Moseley is the most recent to join the illustrious list, having been added earlier this year, while Adam Stokes hopes his new, bigger restaurant in the Colmore Business District will earn a second star.

There are 18 Birmingham restaurants listed in the Harden's guide and six of them were among the top scorers for food in the country:

- Purnell's in the £100+ bracket

- Turners in Harborne in the £80+ bracket

- Adam's, Carters of Moseley and Edmunds in Brindleyplace in the £70+ bracket

- Balti house Al Frash in Ladypool Road in the £25+ bracket

Birmingham fell slightly behind Edinburgh which had eight top scorers (the highest number outside of London) and Manchester had seven.

There were three new entries in the 2016 guide from Birmingham - Polish restaurant Karczma in Bordesley Street; Purecraft Bar & Kitchen in Waterloo Street; Digbath tapas outlet Rico Libre.

Two Birmingham restaurants were dropped from the guide this year - the Argentinian restaurant Fiesta del Asado, which is in Hagley Road and run by the team behind Lasan, and Loves which closed down earlier this year.

Cheal's of Henley, which is run by the former head chef of Simpson's Matt Cheal, is listed as one to watch in 2016.

His restaurant opened too late for the survey which was carried out in October.

Further afield, the guide lists two restaurants in Kenilworth - The Cross and Bosquet - four in Warwick and one in Wolverhampton.
