Midland construction giant Carillion has secured the contract for the expansion of Liverpool FC’s Main Stand.
The Wolverhampton-based support services firm, which recently won a £75 million Dubai World Trade Centre deal, is set to begin work imminently on the £73 million project to expand Anfield stadium.
The contract will see Carillion, which has recently been in merger talks, add about 8,500 seats to the stadium taking it to about 54,000 capacity.
It will also see a “sensitive” relocation of the Hillsborough Memorial and the Shankly Gates, new shops, ticket offices, lounges and around 36 new corporate boxes. There will also be a new concourse outside the famous ground.
Carillion said in a statement: “Further to Carillion’s announcement on July 2, 2014, that it had been selected as the preferred bidder to deliver the expansion of Liverpool Football Club’s Main Stand and associated improvement works, Carillion announces today that it has signed a contract with Liverpool Football Club to deliver this project.
“Work on the project, which will add around 8,500 seats to the Main Stand and increase the overall capacity of Anfield Stadium to some 54,000, is expected to start this week and is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2016.”
