A new apartment and office complex could be built on the site of the former Birmingham Mint in the city's Jewellery Quarter.

New plans have been lodged to regenerate a vacant plot of land, on the corner of Icknield Street and Carver Street, into 13 one- and two-bedroom flats, 2,769 sq ft of ground floor office space and a 20-space car park.

The new-build property, called 'Mint 8A' in the planning application, would have five storeys and include a roof-level penthouse apartment.

Staffordshire architecture firm COS Design and Build is behind this latest phase of the project with work expected to start on site towards the end of 2015 or early next year.

This phase would form the latest stage in a long-running regeneration of the historically significant site in a project dating back well over a decade.

The Birmingham Mint was first established in 1794 by Ralph Heaton and at one point it claimed to the world's largest. It was awarded Grade II-listed status in 1982 and in more recent years has undergone several changes of ownership.

Plans for the former mint factory were first lodged in 2003 and set out a vision for the wholesale regeneration of the site.

However, most of the complex, excluding the block fronting onto Icknield Street and a rear wall, was demolished in April 2007.

In 2009, the wider development stalled when the banks pulled the plug on funding and previous developer Junared went into administration.

New owner Raybone Developments kickstarted the scheme in 2011 and planning permission was award in summer 2013 to renovate the remaining part of the former mint which fronts onto Icknield Street, known as Mint 4.

This renovation was also designed by Penkridge-based COS. Future phases of the project are also planned for later this year behind one of the new blocks, likely to be called Mint 7B following the earlier completion of Mint 7.
