A new direct service to Toronto is launching from Birmingham Airport next year.

Low-cost airline Primera Air has announced the operator will run services three times a week from May, adding to its new US routes to Newark and Boston which were announced in July.

The new route will run all year round on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and cabins will have wi-fi and charging facilities for passengers.

The news comes just a day after budget airline Norwegian confirmed it was scrapping all five of its routes to Spain from Birmingham Airport this weekend.

Primera Air president Andri Ingolfsson said: "Yet again, we are very proud to announce our new direct routes from our European bases to Canada.

"Toronto will be a great addition to our earlier announced Newark and Boston routes from Birmingham."

William Pearson, aviation director at Birmingham Airport, added: "It is welcome news that Primera Air is expanding its choice of popular transatlantic destinations from Birmingham by adding a new route of Toronto.

"Having only announced two new routes in July, this shows the demand that Primera Air is seeing from the Midlands."
